The archaeological and natural “heart” of Logudoro<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

The historical region of Meilogu occupies a particular position in the north of Sardinia: its name, derived from the Latin medius locus (“middle place”), expresses precisely the geographical and cultural function of bridge between the various sub-regions of Logudoro, the ancient medieval Giudicato that dominated the central-northern island. <\/p>\n

The landscape of Meilogu is marked by conical hills and plateaus of volcanic origin that emerge between the cultivated plains and valleys, giving the region a unique and fertile profile, so much so that it is remembered by the naturalist La Marmora as a “Sardinian Auvergne”.<\/p>\n<\/div>

One of the most significant archaeological landscapes on the island<\/h4>\n

Human history in this land has left extraordinary traces, to the point that the entire territory is often evoked as the Valley of the Nuraghi, an area with a very high density of prehistoric monuments. <\/p>\n

At the center of this system stands the Nuraghe Santu Antine in Torralba, one of the most majestic Nuragic monuments in Sardinia and considered the highest synthesis of the architecture of this era. It is a large monumental complex with a central tower, ramparts and a circular village that tells the life of a community from 3,500 years ago, as well as having been reused in Roman periods and later. <\/span><\/p>\n

Around Santu Antine and along the hills of the area there are also numerous other nuraghi, tombs of the giants and domus de janas, widespread evidence of an ancient and continuous population, which make the entire Meilogu an open-air museum of the Nuragic civilization. <\/p>\n

Particularly significant are also the underground necropolises of domus de janas in Cheremule and the Nuragic settlements in the territories of Padria, Pozzomaggiore, Cossoine, Giave and other centers, which document settlement methods and rituals of the prehistoric period.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

The Museum of the Valley of the Nuraghi of Torralba<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Next to the nuraghe, the Museum of the Valley of the Nuraghi tells and interprets this multi-millennial history through archaeological finds found in the surrounding sites, covering a chronological span ranging from prehistory to the Roman and medieval ages and enriching the visit with educational panels, models and ethnographic sections that help to understand the human and material context in which these populations lived.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Villages, spirituality and human landscape<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The natural mother of the territory, however, is much more than just monuments: it is a set of villages and living communities, in which history is preserved in traditional urban centers, in ancient churches and in squares where memory, identity and everyday life are intertwined. Each municipality \u2014 from <\/span>Thiesi, an economic and cultural reference center, to Bonorva, Banari, Siligo, Cheremule and the others \u2014 tells an aspect of the relationship between community and environment. <\/p>\n

In these villages you can find Romanesque and medieval religious architecture, but also urban fabrics that have evolved over the centuries, intertwining the ancient with the present. The urban landscape reflects a continuity of rural and civil life, where the local stone, alleys and fountains tell of ways of living that have their roots in the centuries. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Nature, geology and Mediterranean flair<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Meilogu is also living nature: volcanic reliefs such as Monte Santo or Monte Pelau emerge here and there in the hills, offering panoramic perspectives of the surrounding valleys and plains. This landscape shaped by ancient eruptions today invites you to <\/span>hikes, nature trails and observation of Mediterranean flora, in a context of great environmental variety not far from the sea, while remaining an inland region.<\/p>\n<\/div>
