This territory, which in the Middle Ages was part of the southern curatoria of the Giudicato di Arborea, is marked by a long historical tradition and a landscape that alternates agricultural plains, wooded hills, mining areas and inhabited centers rich in material culture.

Monreale develops around urban nodes such as San Gavino Monreale, a town of about nine thousand inhabitants that stands at the foot of the castle of Monreale — an ancient stronghold of the Giudicato — and preserves in its historic center recognizable elements of Campidanese’s agricultural and artisan culture. Here you will find typical architecture, courtyards with large arches and the Sa Moba Sarda Museum, dedicated to the local agricultural culture with testimonies on the life and transformations of the territory between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Territory, nature and ancient factories

Moving away from the historic squares, the landscape of Monreale reveals its complex nature. To the west, the area is wedged into the reliefs of Monte Linas, a granite massif that dominates the territories of Villacidro, Gonnosfanadiga, Guspini and Arbus, offering glimpses of wild nature, hiking trails and mountain landscapes that dialogue with the lower slopes of the plain. Among the most famous natural beauties are the waterfalls and woods around Villacidro, such as the famous Sa Spendula, which are points of strong attraction for excursions and trekking immersed in the Mediterranean vegetation.

The territory is also marked by an important mining history: in the surroundings of Arbus and Guspini there are sites linked to the extraction of lead, zinc and other minerals, still testified today by the mining villages of Ingurtosu and Montevecchio, which are part of the Historical and Environmental Geomining Park of Sardinia and tell the industrial and social evolution of the region towards the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

<div class="fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column
