Barbagia di Seulo
Nature, archaeology and culture in the heart of Sardinia
Barbagia di Seulo is one of the most authentic historical regions in the heart of the island, located in central Sardinia and including the municipalities of Esterzili, Sadali, Seui, Seulo and Ussassai.. It is characterized by an imposing mountain landscape, with forests, gorges, springs and waterways that expand the visitor’s experience between wild nature, historical anthropization and communities that have been able to preserve unique tangible and intangible assets.
A territory shaped by rocks, water and woods
On the border between the provinces of Nuoro and Southern Sardinia, the Barbagia di Seulo develops between limestone reliefs, valleys engraved by erosion and Mediterranean forests hat offer an extremely suggestive setting for excursions, trekking and outdoor activities. The Flumendosa River, which flows next to Seulo, has carved deep gorges, created waterfalls and natural pools and given rise to karst caves used since prehistoric times as refuges and ritual places.
Mount Perdedu dominates the landscape in the territory of Seulo, reaching 1,334 meters above sea level, and symbolizes the relationship between nature and material culture in this area where holm oak forests, rocky valleys and springs merge into a single sensory experience.

Water, landscapes and stone villages
The common thread of territorial identity is undoubtedly water. The waterfalls of Sa Pischeria and Sa Stiddiosa, the natural pools formed by the Rio San Gerolamo around Ussassai, and the karst caves dug along the course of the Flumendosa are elements that define this Barbagia as a "land of water and stone".
Sadali is often described as the "village of water": its territory is crossed by small streams and streams, with waterfalls that flow into natural pools set in the town or in the surroundings, while Ussassai, the smallest village in the region, stands on the slopes of Monte Arcuerì and offers breathtaking viewpoints on limestone heels and unrepeatable valleys.
Ancient history and widespread archaeology
The Barbagia di Seulo preserves numerous prehistoric and Nuragic remains,a sign of human presence since the early Bronze Age. Throughout the territory there are nuraghi, domus de janas and megalithic tombs, such as those identified in the sites of Monti 'e Nuxi and Esterzili, evidence of complex communities and ancient rituals.
In particular, around the Esterzili area there are important archaeological sites such as the megalithic enclosure of Monte Santa Vittoria, the village of Monti 'e Nuxi and the megaron temple of Sa Domu 'e Urxìa, an imposing Nuragic structure of significant historical interest.
In the heights of Seulo and Seui there are signs of prehistoric presence, including nuraghi such as Su Nuraxeddu and Su Nuraxi 'e Pauli as well as tombs of the giants (Taccu 'e Ticci), which reaffirm how this Barbagia, although smaller than other sub-regions, is an important node of megalithic Sardinia.
Villages, material culture and local identity
The cultural heritage of Barbagia di Seulo is not only made up of natural landscapes or ancient monuments, but also of stone villages and resilient communities. Seui looks like a medieval center perched on the southern slopes of the Gennargentu, where the historic streets, traditional architecture and alleys tell the story of a community linked to the pastoral and mining practices of the past.
Traces of religious and civil architecture are intertwined in the village, while the Museum of Peasant Civilization and Pastoral and Mining Activities offers a privileged point of view on the recent history of these communities and their relationship with a hostile but generous territory.
As in the rest of Barbagia, Sadali, Esterzili, Seulo and Ussassai have urban fabrics characterized by buildings in local stone, intimate squares and glimpses that preserve ancient atmospheres, woven by centuries of history, resistance and adaptation to environmental challenges.
