The historical region of Mandrolisai — also known as Barbagia de Mandrolisai — is one of the most authentic and evocative sub-regions of central Sardinia, located between the offshoots of Gennargentu and inland Barbagia. Historically it was curator of the Giudicato di Arborea and still today retains a strong cultural, landscape and food and wine identity resulting from centuries of rural and pastoral presence.
The territory is characterized by hills, Mediterranean woods and high mountains, in a natural setting full of hiking trails, beech forests, chestnut groves and streams that dialogue with the historic villages perched on the slopes of the Gennargentu.
Natural landscapes and outdoor activities
Nature is one of the main traits of Mandrolisai. The wooded and hilly areas surrounding the villages offer trekking trails, mountain bike routes and nature trails immersed in the Mediterranean scrub. Around Sorgono, for example, there are green crossings perfect for cycling or hiking, with views of the rural landscape and the surrounding mountains.
The forests, pastures and valleys that characterize areas such as Tonara convey an authentic experience of Mediterranean nature, accompanied by the tranquility of the central heights of Sardinia and extensive forests of cork oaks, oaks and local holm oaks.

Villages, history and traditional architecture
The anthropic dimension of Mandrolisai can be discovered in the villages with a strong and authentic character, where the villages are intertwined with ancient traditions, craftsmanship and historical textures that are still recognizable today.
Atzara is a village of medieval origins surrounded by vineyards and woods; it preserves a historic center with traditional granite architecture and houses the Antonio Ortiz Echagüe Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, which celebrates the artistic and cultural history of the town, also linked to the local school of painting.
Desulo is a mountain village perched on a slope of the Gennargentu massif, known for its traditional stone architecture and historic alleys.. Here you can vividly perceive the pastoral culture and rural life, also told through ethnographic museums and ancient local costumes, and the area offers trekking itineraries that wind through the woods and along the slopes.
Sorgono is historically the capital of the region, with an urban plot that opens onto hills and slopes. In the territory there are Menhirs, domus de janas (underground burials) and nuraghi of prehistoric origin, witnesses of the millennial human presence and ancient civilizations of the island.
Ortueri retains its identity imprint in the historic centers and in the surrounding rural fabric, with living local traditions and a countryside landscape marked by olive groves and vineyards.
Tonara is known for its unique craft and gastronomic traditions: it is considered the "village of nougats", famous for the artisanal production of nougat, and actively participates in folkloristic events and popular events that celebrate the local tangible and intangible heritage.
Widespread archaeology and ancient history
Mandrolisai preserves a rich heritage of prehistoric and Nuragic archaeological remains scattered around the towns. In particular, in areas such as Sorgono, sites with menhirs, domus de janas and nuraghes emerge, the result of a thousand-year history that dates back to the protohistoric culture of the island.
This archaeological plot, integrated with rural architecture and the Mediterranean landscape, tells the evolution of local communities from the Neolithic to the historical age, offering places of great charm for cultural visits.
Food and wine and local identity
Among the highlights of the experience of visiting Mandrolisai there is also the wine production: the area has given its name to the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) Mandrolisai, a red and rosé wine made from native grapes (such as Bovale Sardo, Cannonau and Monica) grown on inland hills. This wine is appreciated for its structure and link with the territory.
The local gastronomy, in addition to wine, includes specialties such as the artisanal nougat of Tonara and other typical mountain products, while events and popular festivals offer moments of meeting and tasting of the excellence of the area.
